As a specialist for pipe and sewer services, it is your job to check pipe networks and sewer systems for leaks. As part of this apprenticeship course, therefore, you learn to use special cameras to identify damage and then to repair this with remote-controlled robots. And, if the technology can't solve the problem, you must step in yourself. Wearing protective gear and respiratory equipment, you make sure our customers' pipe and sewer systems remain in a good condition – helping to keep the environment clean and safe. Our operatives in the industrial services division remove residue and deposits using a variety of specialty machines (e.g. high pressure pumps and vacuum/suction equipment) and then send any residual material on for professional treatment. They operate, service and inspect machines, equipment and special vehicles and ensure all laws and technical, health and safety regulations are kept to at all times. This profession requires a combination of skills: you need to be both customer and service-oriented, good at working with your hands and able to recognise how scientific and technical factors are interconnected.
This apprenticeship lasts for 3 years and is divided up into (a) core skills needed for all areas of work and (b) specialist skills required for specific industrial services. A mix of vocational college, inter-company and on-the-job training ensures there is a good balance between theory and practice. You alternate between going to vocational college, taking part in inter-company practical courses and then getting hands-on experience by helping out in customer projects at our regional branches. What's more, you spend 13 months of your apprenticeship at our training centre in Schwedt. This centre has a well-organised programme that teaches you more about the practical side of your future work and helps prepare you for your final exams.
Besides having a 'Hauptschulabschluss' [school leaving certificate (age 16)], you must be a person who is very observant and risk aware and who works in a very careful manner if you wish to train to become a specialist for pipe, sewer and industrial services. You work as part of a team which means you are not only responsible for your own safety but also for that of your colleagues and anyone else close by. You should be good at working with your hands, have strong technical skills, be willing to learn and have staying power as facing unexpected problems and having to come up with a sustainable solution is part of your everyday work. You should also feel comfortable working at height and in tight spaces.
If you achieve the right grades, then there is a good chance that you will be taken on by our company. You can then make the most of our further training programme. Once you have gathered enough experience, you can, for example, train to get your master qualifications or to become a technician. Moreover, you can choose to specialise in a specific field – for example in sewer construction or quality control.
