Painter / decorators specialising in design and maintenance work line and coat the interior walls, ceilings, floors and façades of buildings. You maintain buildings made of a whole variety of materials or apply coats of paint to give them a new high-resistant and aesthetically pleasing finish. Your tasks include decorating interior rooms with different painting techniques (using paint, plaster or wallpaper) and protecting window frames and doors with coats of paint or varnish. A further important part of your work is installing interior and/or exterior insulation systems – helping to reduce energy consumption.
An apprenticeship to become a painter/decorator specialising in 'design & maintenance' lasts 3 years. You get to know all about a wide range of materials and their different properties and contents. Besides mastering the most important work methods (such as the different painting techniques), you also learn about design work and preparing projects, including the health and safety measures required when working at height or on the ground.
You need a 'Hauptschulabschluss' [school leaving certificate (age 16)] to be able to do an apprenticeship to become a painter / decorator. You should be good at working with your hands and have a good eye for colour. You should be comfortable working at height, enjoy being part of a team and be a reliable person. Finally, you are creative, work in a careful manner and enjoy designing surface finishes with paints and patterns.
A whole number of options are open to you once you have finished your apprenticeship. You can, for example, gain further qualifications to become a certified technician. Or you can specialise in a specific field, such as corrosion protection, maintenance work or thermal insulation. No matter whether you choose to gain your master qualifications as a painter and decorator or extend your skills as a painter's assistant – there are many different ways for you to move up the career ladder.
