XERVON Wind completes a major project at two wind farms in the North Sea off Germany

The two wind farms Amrumbank West and Nordsee Ost can be found far out at sea off the island of Heligoland. They are among the largest wind energy projects along the German coast and truly are an impressive sight. The nacelles on the Nordsee Ost wind turbines easily have a surface area big enough to take a detached home and the rotor blades sweep round an area the size of two football pitches.

Summer is the preferred time of year to have inspection and maintenance services delivered as sea-based assignments require high levels of planning and are impacted by the weather. Last year, for the first time, XERVON Wind took on the job of servicing these wind farms on behalf of RWE, the world’s no. 2 company in the global offshore wind energy sector. It deployed over 60 specialist service technicians for this particular 2022 maintenance contract, who were called on to service both mechanical and electro-technical components.

The Amrumbank West offshore wind farm has 80 wind turbines.

The list of jobs that had to be executed was both complex and extensive: the Amrumbank West offshore wind farm is situated approx. 40km off the coast and comprises 80 wind turbines with hubs towering around 90 metres above the surface of the sea. Nordsee Ost is ca. 60 kilometres off the shore and has 48 wind turbines, each around 160 metres in height. Depending on the specific requirements, XERVON Wind’s crews of engineers carried out their tasks either based at sea, i.e. on an SOV (service operation vessel), or based on Heligoland.

The wind energy specialists were able to add further benefits to the project by cooperating with their sister company Rhenus Offshore Logistics. By doing so, they could offer logistical expertise alongside their own range of specialist technical services. In practice, this collaboration meant that the different tasks were not only perfectly dovetailed but also completed more quickly – key benefits for customers especially when their operations are out on the open sea.
