How do you stay up to date in terms of expertise and innovation as an industrial service provider? Questions for Jan van Remmen from BUCHEN EnergyServices:
With around 260 employees at eight locations, BUCHEN EnergyServices is a Europe-wide innovation driver for cleaning processes in combustion, steam generation, and biomass plants, as well as thermal waste utilization. In this anniversary year, let's take a look back—and look ahead to technologies and processes that will ensure our customers' long-term success.
3 questions for managing director Jan van Remmen
What key milestones have shaped the company and what makes it such a strong business today?
We’ve deliberately expanded our company in a targeted way: new branches and acquisitions of experienced, owner-led firms have strengthened our operations. As has our move to our premises in Herne with its bigger grounds and bigger capacities. Our rope access technology, detonative cleaning services, blasting helmet radio communications system and large electrified machinery help speed up projects and increase safety levels. Our strength, however is, as always, our employees.
What makes BUCHEN EnergyServices unique for its customers?
We go into places that are not so pleasant: areas that are dark, narrow, loud or dirty. 24/7. We develop suitable concepts for each individual task and select the right processes and systems – whether it involves manual work or highly complex specialist processes. And we always deliver flexibility, quality and safety – these are the things that shape us.
What role will BUCHEN EnergyServices play in the areas of innovation, sustainability and customer benefits over the next 5 to 10 years?
Our teams bring practical ideas back with them after they’ve been working in the field. And we try to systematically realise these ideas. We’ll be working on a number of projects over the coming years: such as increasing our use of large electric machinery, digitising various processes and optimising our consumption of resources.

Core business: boiler cleaning
For trouble-free processes, clean exhaust gas values, and higher efficiency: BUCHEN EnergyService provides a complete service—from blasting and demolition work to suction work in boiler systems, flue gas cleaning systems, and fuel feeding.
Real teams, full commitment
Readiness, skill, safety awareness: The teams are present at many locations and are experienced in inspection work, in confined spaces, and in working in multi-shift systems. Safety? Top priority – that's why measures such as “Safe Together,” Sibe/FaSi support, trained specialists with certifications in SCC, respiratory protection, crane/forklift, and FISAT industrial climbing are used. Certifications according to ISO 9001, SCCP, WHG specialist company, and FISAT membership underpin the high quality and safety standards. For clear communication during operations, the sandblasting team uses the company's own blasting helmet radio system.
Processes & equipment, precisely coordinated
The right cleaning process for every part of the plant: abrasive blasting, ultra-high pressure water jetting, CO₂ blasting, chemical processes, cleaning of heat exchangers, LUVO/GAVO cleaning, industrial climbing, and blasting technology. Large electrically powered equipment enables precise work with lower emissions and stable restarts. Depending on the findings, specialized blasting media are used, including burner chamber slag granulate, glass beads, nut shells, corundum, iron-free granulate, and sodium bicarbonate. These comprehensive processes ensure a full industrial cleaning service in waste incineration plants, power plants, and other energy generation facilities, from fuel feeding to the chimney.
