One project, multiple trades

Reliable teamwork from XERVON in the renovation of a pipe bridge

End of the working day on the A2 near Gelsenkirchen: six lanes, heavy traffic. While thousands of commuters are on the road below, all work is proceeding according to plan on the pipe bridge above. Precision and absolute safety are required here. There is one simple rule: nothing must fall. No blasting material, no tools, no work equipment or aids. All processes are geared towards this – from empty pockets and secured tools to dust-proof enclosures.

Interaction of many trades

Scaffolding and surface technology are interlinked, handovers are clearly regulated, and every step is precisely planned. Interfaces are minimized and schedules are adhered to. Everything from a single source, everything for a smooth process. Because what counts here is both the quality of the individual trades and reliable cooperation throughout the entire scope of the project.

4.8.:

Start Gerüst

Traffic safety measures and barriers are put into place, the building site secured. A self-supporting industrial scaffold is erected to prevent the pipe racks having to bear additional loads. The problem: the very small construction area requires tightly scheduled material logistics and strict time windows for lifting the material. Drop prevention measures from the start: empty pockets, secured tools, marked access routes; work initially carried out during the day without road closures; critical lifting tasks planned as night work with lane closures.

5.9.:
Gerüst fertig

Access is complete, the self-supporting system has been statically tested, and brackets, piping strips, and anchor points for the enclosure have been prepared. A total of 130 tons of scaffolding material was used.

8.9.:
Plan Montage

The tarpaulins have been installed and the seams/overlaps sealed; double-entry systems have been set up to enable access. The tarps are checked to make sure they are absolutely dust-proof. The result: everything is as it should be. The surface technology experts can begin their work earlier than planned in safe stages.

15.9.:
Oberflächentechnik startet

Around 60 tonnes of blasting media are used to remove the old coats. The goal: a new anti-corrosion coating. Special feature: special protective measures are needed because the old coating is contaminated – a decontamination area is set up with showers for the staff and HEPA filter units to remove the dust. Around 15,000m³ of air are cleaned every hour, the contaminated debris vacuumed up mornings and evenings. All this in an area without its own infrastructure in the middle of an open field.

27.10.:
Oberflächentechnik fertig

The new protective coating has been applied: three coats, a total of 240 micrometers. 2 tonnes of coating material were needed to do this – a three-layer system in line with C3 standards. Protection against environmental influences and other negative factors for around 15 years.

28.10.:
Start Rückbau Gerüst

Once the tarpaulins have been removed, work starts on dismantling the scaffolding. Everything according to a strict schedule – the closed lanes and rolling traffic mean there is absolutely no leeway.

21.11.:
Gerüst abgebaut und Projekt
 in time abgeschlossen

The scaffolding has been removed, the project completed on time. The planning work and interactions between all the trades went smoothly without any delays or complications. Proof just how well strictly scheduled, multi-trade projects can be run.

The project: a few facts & figures

  • Project/location: maintenance work on pipe racks, A2 motorway
  • Total time: ca. 3½ months + 10 months’ preparation
  • Trades: scaffolding, surface technology
  • Special features: old contaminated coating, dust-proof covering, narrow surfaces, no on-site infrastructure
  • Outcome: completed within schedule & budget
  • QSE/CoW: present throughout (approval of tasks, checks, hand-over)

Highest customer satisfaction

It all went well. Perfectly in fact. This construction site was a prime example of how HSE and CoW-managed projects should be run. No deviations during the field checks, monitoring and control measures clearly in place, transparent processes and everything carefully documented. And the organisation? Exactly as it should be – and confirmed on a regular basis. Just the way reliable project management should be during an ongoing operation.
